Registration as a Buyer: Who Is Eligible to Buy, and What Documents Are Required?
Only businesses can buy on CarOnSale; private individuals cannot register. You’ll need three things: a valid VAT ID number that is authorized for intra-Community trade, an extract from the commercial register or a business registration certificate listing automobile sales, and a copy of the owner’s or managing director’s ID. Once the documents are complete, we’ll review them within one business day. Registration is free.

Who can buy vehicles on CarOnSale?
Only business owners as defined in Section 14 of the German Civil Code (BGB) who make purchases in the course of their commercial activities. The registered business activity must include the trade in motor vehicles (NACE code 45.11). They purchase in their own name and on their own account, not on behalf of third parties. CarOnSale may verify their status as a business owner at any time and request supporting documentation.
What documents do I need to register?
- A valid VAT ID number that is activated for intra-Community trade
- An extract from the commercial register or a business registration that lists the sale of motor vehicles (NACE 45.11) as the business activity
- A copy of the ID of the owner or managing director
I only have a tax ID number; I don't have a VAT ID number. Can I register?
No. You need a valid VAT ID number that is activated for intra-Community trade; a national tax ID number is not sufficient. Once you have the VAT ID number, you can complete the registration.
Why does CarOnSale need my information and proof of business registration?
CarOnSale sells exclusively to businesses and must verify this. This also affects sales tax: A vehicle is treated as a business-to-business transaction only if you provide a valid sales tax ID number, and only then can you purchase the vehicle at net price for export to another EU country. We use the copy of your ID to confirm who is acting on behalf of your company.
How long does the exam take?
If your documents are complete, we will review them within one business day. If it takes longer, please check the following:
- Is your VAT ID number activated for intra-Community trade?
- Does the commercial register extract or business registration indicate that the business involves the sale of motor vehicles (NACE 45.11)?
- Have you uploaded a copy of the owner's or managing director's ID?
Once you have everything ready, submit a request regarding your account under "My Requests."
Does registration cost anything?
No, registering as a buyer is free. Fees are only charged when you purchase a vehicle. You can view your current fees in your CarOnSale account.
